February 2001 page 1 CPT-5: Categorizing the Codes This article addresses the origin, intent, and process for the development of extensions of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes-Category II codes and Category III codes. The current CPT codes are considered Category I codes. Category II codes are intended to identify performance measurement and Category III codes are intended to identify new and emerging technology. The recommendation to develop these new code sets came from the Research and Managed Care Workgroups and the Project Advisory Group (PAG) of the CPT-5 Project.
