May 2000 page 8 Coding Communication Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System The Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) has announced its new Medicare payment system for hospital outpatient services, with implementation effective for claims with dates of service on or after July 1, 2000. The provisions for provider-based facilities owned by hospitals, including physician office practices, will be effective six months from the April 7, 2000, publication date.
