However, in certain abnormal conditions, the capillaries are bypassed and blood flows directly from the arterial system into the venous system. An abnormal bypass channel between an arterial lumen and a venous lumen is an arteriovenous fistula. A thrombosed arteriovenous fistula is an aggregation of blood factors, primarily platelets and fibrin with entrapment of cellular elements causing vascular obstruction (clot) at the point of formation.
