Elevated Lipoprotein(a)
Code E78.41, Elevated lipoprotein(a), was created for elevated Lipoprotein(a) (also represented as Lp(a), a common genetic lipid disorder that increases the risk for early cardiovascular disease including myocardial infarction, stroke, peripheral artery disease and calcific aortic valve stenosis.
Lipoprotein(a) is a plasma lipoprotein that is similar to LDL (low-density lipoprotein) in containing one molecule of apolipoprotein B (apoB), but differs in that it contains the additional protein, apolipoprotein(a) (apo(a)). The apo(a) portion of Lp(a) may interfere with fibrinolysis and promote thrombosis, by inhibiting plasminogen activation. The apo(B) portion may promote atherosclerosis similar to LDL cholesterol.
