Malignant Pleural Effusion
Effective October 1, 2008, code 511.8, Other specified forms of effusion, except tuberculous, has been further expanded to differentiate between malignant pleural effusion (511.81) and other specified forms of pleural effusion (511.89).
Pleural effusions are typically caused by congestive heart failure, metastasis, lymphoma, infection, pulmonary embolism and trauma. Patients usually present with symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, dyspnea and inability to tolerate exercise. Fever and empyema can also occur.
