Newborn Macrosomia and Diabetic Mother
Coding Clinic Third Quarter 1991, page 5, states that code 775.0, Syndrome of infant of a diabetic mother, should be assigned when the newborn infant of a diabetic or gestational diabetic mother manifests features of this condition (e.g., macrosomia, decrease in blood sugar, or other conditions). However, we have been instructed that the documentation should specifically state, “macrosomia due to infant of a diabetic mother syndrome†and the baby must have multiple symptoms in order for the diagnosis to be accurate. Does the physician have to state that the macrosomia is “due to†the syndrome, or is the fact that the infant has some manifestation of the syndrome sufficient to assign code 775.0?
