The spinal arthrodesis family of codes were revised and expanded for the 2012 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) code set in follow-up to the American Medical Association (AMA) Relative Value Scale Update Committee (RUC) Five-Year Review Identification Workgroup analyses recommendation to combine codes that were frequently reported together. Two new lumbar arthrodesis codes (22633 and 22634) were added to report lumbar arthrodesis utilizing a combined posterior or posterolateral technique with a posterior interbody technique including laminectomy and/or discectomy sufficient to prepare interspace for a single interspace and segment.
