October 2004 pages 1-3 Coding of the Auditory System Acute otitis media (AOM) is an inflammation that occurs in the middle ear and, if not treated in a timely and appropriate manner, can lead to chronic suppurative otitis media or other complications. AOM is the most common bacterial illness in children and the one most commonly treated with antibiotics.
