October 2005 pages 14-17 Coding Communication:Continuous Ambulatory Electrocardiography Ambulatory electrocardiography (ECG) provides a continuous recording of heart rhythm during normal activity. A physician may order a continuous ambulatory ECG (also known as a Holter monitor) to diagnose an abnormal or dangerous heart rhythm, especially in a patient with heart muscle damage or weakness, or to ascertain the efficacy of a heart medication. Other examples of conditions for which the test may be ordered include atrial fibrillation or flutter, multifocal atrial tachycardia, paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, palpitations, and fainting.
