October 1996 page 10a Coding Consultation Evaluation and Management, Consultation (Q&A) Question In the September 1996 CPT Assistant, page 2, you state: "After the consulting physician completes the initial consultation, if that physician assumes responsibility for managing all or a portion of the patient's condition(s), then he or she should not report the consultation codes." Some of my coworkers have interpreted this statement to mean that if the physician assumes the responsibility for managing the patient's care, the consultation codes should not be used for any visit, including the initial visit.
