April 1998 page 13 Glossary of Related Terms Anomaly: Deviation from the average norm; anything structurally unusual or irregular or contrary to the general rule usually genetic or inherited. Atrial septal defect: A hole in the wall separating both atria that permits mixing of oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood (usually flows from the left atrium to the right resulting in excessive blood flow through the lungs except in the neonate where right to left flow is common) (see figs 2, 2a).
