May 2013 pages 8-10 Intraoperative Neurophysiology Monitoring (95940 and 95941) Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) is defined as the use of electrophysiological methods to monitor the functional integrity of certain neural structures (eg, nerves, spinal cord, and parts of the brain) during surgery. It is widely used in hospitals throughout the United States and can help prevent damage to structures and warn a surgeon of impending complications. Providers typically obtain baseline examinations to establish a pre-intervention reference.
