June 2016 page 4 Mediastinoscopy with Biopsy In the last few years, refinements in computed tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) and development of endoscopic bronchoscopic ultrasound (EBUS) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) have significantly expanded noninvasive diagnostic options for staging lung cancer patients. Mediastinoscopy, as a result, is now less commonly performed (see Figure 1). Mediastinoscopy, which is an invasive procedure, is most commonly performed when CT, PET, and EBUS biopsies are inconclusive and show abnormalities that may represent the spread of tumor to the mediastinum.
