Acute Idiopathic Pulmonary Hemorrhage in Infants

Effective October 1, 2010, code 786.3, Hemoptysis, was expanded to create a new code (786.31) to identify acute idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage in infants (AIPHI) older than 28 days. AIPHI is a rare condition that is characterized by the abrupt start of pulmonaryhemorrhage in a previously healthy baby. Signs and symptoms of pulmonaryhemorrhage include hemoptysis and blood in the noseor airway without evidence of upper respiratory or gastrointestinalbleeding. These infants usually present with acute, severe respiratory distressor failure requiring mechanical ventilation, and in most cases bilateral infiltrates are demonstrated on chest x-ray.
