Adenosine Deaminase Deficiency

Code D81.31, Severe combined immunodeficiency due to adenosine deaminase deficiency, was created for adenosine deaminase (ADA) deficiency that damages the immune system and causes severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), which is commonly referred to as SCID due to ADA deficiency. ADA is an inherited disorder of purine metabolism that is characterized by the accumulation of deoxyadenosine, a molecule that is toxic to lymphocytes, the cells that make up the immune system.
