Antineoplastic Chemotherapy Induced Anemia

Effective October 1, 2009, a new code has been created to uniquely identify antineoplastic chemotherapy induced anemia (285.3). Previously, there were no ICD-9-CM codes to differentiate antineoplastic chemotherapy induced anemia from other anemias. This caused a lack of specificity in coding and reporting both chemotherapy induced anemia and other anemias. Antineoplastic chemotherapy induced anemia is anemia caused by the administration of cancer drugs. This type of anemia is rarely a hemolytic process and is not usually an aplastic process.
