Application of MatriStemâ„¢ Wound Powder

In ICD-9-CM, xenograft is coded 86.65, Heterograft to skin. The exclusion note at code 86.65 and Coding Clinic, Third Quarter 2002, p. 23, clarify that code 93.57, Application of other wound dressing, is assigned when a xenograft is being supplied and used as a wound dressing. Coding Clinic, Third Quarter 2012, p. 15, directed to assign code 93.57 for the application of Matrix powder. At our facility, we see cases where the surgeon applies Matrix powder before fixating a graft. We were told that a MatriStem™ xenograft is not a wound dressing and are seeking clarification. For example, a 79-year-old patient with a chronic non-healing stage IV sacral pressure ulcer underwent excisional debridement followed by MatriStem™ xenograft implantation. The procedure describes implantation of powder to the base of the wound for placement of a fixation of graft.
