Our facility needs clarification on how to appropriately report external fetal monitoring which is often performed in the hospital outpatient setting (ED/ER). CPT codes 59050, Fetal monitoring during labor by consulting physician (i.e., non-attending physician) with written report; supervision and interpretation, and 59051, Fetal monitoring during labor by consulting physician (i.e., non-attending physician) with written report; interpretation only, are reported when fetal monitoring is performed internally. Would it be appropriate to report CPT code 59899, Unlisted procedure, maternity care and delivery, for external fetal monitoring? ...
