Effective October 1, 2008, code 571.42, Autoimmune hepatitis, has been created for this condition that had been synonymous with chronic active hepatitis. Prior to this change, this condition was assigned to code 571.49, Chronic hepatitis, Other. Recent literature shows that with the use of new viral serologic tests, hepatologists are able to differentiate chronic viral hepatitis from other types of liver disease, including autoimmune hepatitis.
