Billing intravenous infusions with observation

Many hospitals have raised concerns regarding the billing of intravenous infusions with observation. It was noted that observation claims (G0244) billed with intravenous infusion services (Q0081) were denied because of the “T” status indicator assigned to HCPCS code Q0081. In response CMS proposed the implementation of HCPCS G code G0258. Clarification on how the code G0258 would be utilized was requested by the hospitals.
