Breast codes: Biopsy and localization devices

The American Medical Association has created several codes for the CPT code-set in the surgery section for breast procedures. First, we will look at the biopsy codes with imaging guidance, which also include, when performed, placement of localization devices. Second, we will look at the placement of localization devices utilizing different imaging techniques. Breast biopsy procedures involve the excision of varying tissue amounts for diagnostic purposes. The appropriate code from CPT code range 19081–19086 is reported for image-guided biopsies which include localization device placement, when performed, and imaging of the specimen when performed.
