A brief history of drug administration reporting under OPPS

The reporting of drug administration for hospital outpatient services rendered under the OPPS has changed from HCPCS level II codes in 2004 and years prior to CPT codes in 2005 and then to a combination of HCPCS level II and CPT codes in 2006. When the OPPS began, drug administration services were reported with several HCPCS Q-codes, including HCPCS codes Q0081, Infusion therapy, using other than chemotherapeutic drugs, per visit, Q0083, Chemotherapy administration by other than infusion technique only, and Q0084, Chemotherapy administration of infusion technique only, per visit.
