Bronchospasm

Effective October 1, 2006, code 519.11, Acute bronchospasm, was created to uniquely identify acute bronchospasm in a patient who has not been diagnosed with asthma and does not meet the accepted criteria for bronchitis. Bronchospasm is a contraction of the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles that causes an airway restriction. When mast cells or basophils are exposed to a stimulus, the body’s inflammatory response constricts the bronchioles, causes narrowing of the airway and increases the production of mucous, which reduces the available oxygen.
