Carotid Sinus Baroreflex Activation Device

Effective October 1, 2010, codes have been created for the implantation of carotid sinus baroreflex activation device. The baroreflex system is the system that helps regulate cardiovascular function. The carotid sinus baroreflex activation system is currently the only surgical procedure that implants a medical device to treat patients with primary hypertension. It consists of an implantable pulse generator, bilateral carotid sinus leads and a computer programming system. The pulse generator is placed in a subcutaneous pocket in the pectoral region below the collar bone.
