Chest Pain Secondary to Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA)

The radiologist requested the correct code assignment for a patient seen in the emergency department (ED) following a motor vehicle accident (MVA). The patient is complaining of chest pain and the physician orders a chest x-ray, which turns out to be negative. The reason for the exam is listed as “MVA, chest pain.” This is a radiologist service and no other information is available. Should we conclude that the chest pain is an injury that resulted from the MVA and assign an injury code, or just code this as chest pain (786.50). How should this be coded? ...
