The closed-chest heart-lung bypass, also referred to as percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass or Bard cardiopulmonary assist system, is currently assigned to code 39.65, pending the assignment of a new code. The percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass is accomplished via catheters in the femoral artery and vein with aspiration of blood from the right atrium, oxygenating it, and returning it to the distal aorta.
