CMS proposes the implementation of an E/M expert panel

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continues to move forward in pursuit of uniform national coding guidelines for facilities. Acknowledging the need for standard code definitions and guidelines, CMS proposed the implementation of an independent expert panel. This expert panel will recommend to CMS definitions and guidelines for clinic and emergency department evaluation and management (E/M) codes. It is intended that these recommendations be provided in time for CMS to include them in the proposed rule for calendar year 2004.
