Contact/Exposure A new code (V87.02) has been created to describe patients who have been in contact with or suspected exposure to uranium. Uranium is radioactive and contact or exposure can cause chemical and radiological toxicity. The major effect is kidney toxicity, which is caused by breathing air contaminated by uranium particles or by eating food containing uranium. Very high uranium intake (approximately 50-150 mg) can lead to acute kidney failure and death.
