Computer Assisted Surgery

Effective October 1, 2004, a new subcategory 00.3, Computer assisted surgery [CAS], has been created to identify recent advances in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures being performed with the assistance of computer technology. The new codes will be important for data collection so that hospitals, researchers and payers will have the ability to monitor the utilization and value of CAS. The data will also allow interested parties to compare the resources and outcomes associated with the use of CAS versus traditional operative procedures. CAS is an adjunctive surgical process using imaging, markers, reference frames, intraoperative sensing and computer workstations...
