Congenital Zika Virus Disease

A new code was created to uniquely identify congenital Zika virus disease (P35.4). The Zika virus is an arthropod-borne virus spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The virus can be passed from the mother to the fetus via the placenta. In the United States, approximately one in ten pregnant women with Zika virus delivered infants with congenital anomalies, such as microcephaly in which head and brain development is abnormal when compared to normal infants.
