Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts

Coronary artery bypass surgery is performed to improve the blood supply to the myocardium when a blockage of the artery has reduced the flow of blood. Many aortocoronary bypass grafts use the saphenous vein with a segment removed from the leg, transposed to and sewn into the aorta, and then sewn into the coronary artery distal to the blockage. Occasionally, a segment of the internal mammary artery is used as the graft material.
