Description of Cystic Fibrosis Cystic fibrosis, also known as mucoviscidosis or cystic fibrosis of the pancreas, is a disorder of the exocrine glands that causes accumulation of very thick, tenacious mucus and abnormal concentrations of sodium and chloride in sweat and saliva. Diagnosis is made by an elevated sweat-chloride test. The complications that occur in cystic fibrosis are primarily due to the thick mucus. Cystic fibrosis is the most common cause of life-threatening pulmonary disease in the white population during childhood and adolescence.
