Diagnostic endoscopy with biopsy

Hospitals are advised to follow ICD-9-CM coding practices in code assignments for diagnostic endoscopies with biopsies. Use the necessary code(s) to identify the diagnostic endoscopy and the biopsy. The revised Fiscal Intermediary Manual (Part 3, transmittal 1136, Sect 3639.1), issued by the Health Care Financing Administration, provides the instructions for fiscal intermediaries in handling the biopsy procedure codes for payment purposes. Biopsies performed via endoscopy or percutaneous aspiration are referred to as "closed" biopsies. An incisional approach for removal of tissue is referred to as an "open biopsy."
