When billing for drugs, hospitals and other providers are reminded to refer to the dosage description in the long descriptor of the HCPCS drug code to appropriately bill the units used in the administration of a drug to the patient. Providers and hospitals should not bill the units based on the way the drug is packaged, stored, or stocked. HCPCS short descriptors are limited to 28 characters, which include spaces, and therefore, do not accurately capture the complete descriptor of the HCPCS code.
