Dieulafoy Lesion

Effective October 1, 2002, new codes have been created to uniquely report Dieulafoy lesion of the stomach, duodenum and intestine. Prior to this, the ICD-9-CM index guided the user only to ulcer of the stomach. Dieulafoy lesion is a rare and difficult to recognize cause of major gastrointestinal bleeding. It consists of an arteriole that protrudes through a tiny mucosal defect. It is usually seen within 6 cm of the gastroesophageal junction on the lesser curve of the stomach.
