Ectopic and Molar Pregnancy

Ten new codes have been created to capture multiple gestation pregnancy with or without co-existing ectopic and intrauterine pregnancies. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized ovum is implanted and develops anywhere outside the uterus. Utilization of assisted reproductive technologies has resulted in an increase in multiple gestational pregnancies in which an intrauterine pregnancy may coexist with an ectopic pregnancy. The fourth character indicates the extrauterine location of the ectopic pregnancy (i.e., abdominal, tubal, ovarian, other, etc.), and the fifth character indicates with or without intrauterine pregnancy.
