Exchange of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Component (Oxygenator)

The patient was placed on venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) earlier during the day. Bleeding was noted from the right femoral artery cannula site and the patient was emergently returned to surgery for management of the bleed. Because the surgeon determined that it would be too difficult to identify and control the bleeding, the cannula was moved from the right to the left femoral artery. ECMO support was temporarily stopped; the cannulas were clamped; the outflow cannula was separated from the right femoral artery and transferred to a new cannula in the left femoral artery.
