Expert panel submits facility evaluation/management coding recommendations to CMS

An expert panel convened by the American Hospital Association (AHA) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) recently submitted to CMS recommendations for standardizing hospital evaluation and management (E/M) coding of emergency department and clinical services. These recommendations address hospital outpatient coding only-not physician E/M coding. The panel has suggested replacing the current five levels of E/M facility care with three levels (low, mid and high) to improve consistency, reliability and ease of use.
