A new row was added to code table 5A0, Physiological Systems, Assistance, creating a new code for continuous respiratory filtration. Body SystemDurationFunction9 Respiratory 2 Continuous 0 Filtration The new code identifies a technique for extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) in patients with acute respiratory failure whose main feature is hypercapnia. In acute hypercapnic respiratory failure, decreasing CO2 is the key need rather than increasing oxygenation. The technique is analogous to dialysis.
