Extracorporeal oxygenation

Note: As of October 1, 1988, extracorporeal oxygenation is coded to 39.65. The current code assignment for extracorporeal oxygenation is 39.61, Extracorporeal circulation. Extracorporeal oxygenation is a life-saving treatment for infants with severe neonatal respiratory failure. It involves a cardiopulmonary bypass-like procedure as performed in the operating room for open-heart surgery. The use of the newer membrane oxygenation allows bypass to continue for days and weeks rather than minutes and hours.
