Failed Sedation

Effective October 1, 2009, a new code has been created to uniquely identify failed moderate sedation during procedure (995.24). Moderate (conscious) sedation by nonanesthesia providers can be satisfactory to provide safe and adequate pain relief and/or amnesia to patients undergoing noxious procedures that do not ordinarily require a full anesthetic. However, in some situations, this may produce an insufficient amount of sedation making the procedure more difficult to perform and less comfortable to the patient.
