Heart Assist Device Systems

The Central Office has received numerous requests for clarification regarding appropriate coding for cases involving temporary circulatory system heart assist devices. These devices are generally classified as hemodynamic support devices that unload the left ventricle, mini heart pumps/ventricular assist devices (VAD), and temporary circulatory support and recovery devices. Generally, these heart assist devices include an inflow cannula, a pump, an outflow graft, and an external controller component.
