Hungry Bone Syndrome

Effective October 1, 2008, a new code (275.5) has been created to uniquely identify hungry bone syndrome (HBS). Prior to these changes, HBS was assigned to code 275.41, Hypocalcemia. Hungry bone syndrome (HBS) is a state of marked and prolonged hypocalcemia. HBS occurs in approximately 12% of patients post-parathyroidectomy. Symptoms include seizures, arrhythmia, prolonged QT, numbness, tetany, parasthesia, Chvostek’s sign, and Trousseau’s sign.
