Code E78.0, Pure hypercholesterolemia, has been expanded to create code E78.00, Pure hypercholesterolemia, unspecified, and code E78.01, Familial hypercholesterolemia, in order to improve detection and screening in patients with this treatable condition. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common autosomal dominant genetic disorder that impairs the body’s ability to remove low density lipoprotein (LDL), the “bad cholesterol” that causes blockage of the coronary arteries.
