Hyperparathyroidism

Effective October 1, 2004, code 252.0, Hyperparathyroidism, has been expanded to separately identify unspecified hyperparathyroidism (252.00), primary hyperparathyroidism (252.01), secondary hyperparathyroidism, nonrenal (252.02), and other hyperparathyroidism (252.08). The new codes will now allow differentiation between the different types of hyperparathyroidism. Hyperparathyroidism is a disease characterized by the excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by the parathyroid glands. PTH is a substance that helps maintain the correct balance of calcium and phosphorous in the body.
