Inappropriate use of V10 for secondary malignancies

It appears that there is some confusion as to whether codes from category V10, Personal history of malignant neoplasm, should be assigned for a history of a secondary malignancy. The instructional notes listed under each subcategory refer to specific code ranges for primary malignancies categories (categories 140-195). Secondary malignancies are excluded from the range of codes. This information was previously published in Second Quarter Coding Clinic 1990,the neoplasm section (E) of the reporting guidelines, which stated, "use the appropriate code from the V10 series to indicate the former site of the primary malignancy."
