Major Osseous Defect

Effective October 1, 2006, code 731.3, Major osseous defect, was created for osseous defects. Osseous defects are the result of extensive bone loss, commonly in the area of the hip joint. Causes of this bone loss include peri-prosthetic osteolysis from a joint replacement, osteomyelitis, aseptic or osteonecrosis, benign or malignant neoplasm, pathologic fracture, severe osteoporosis, trauma, or a combination of these conditions.
