Effective October 1, 2009, code 670, Major puerperal infection, has been revised and expanded to a subcategory that uniquely distinguishes unspecified major puerperal infection (670.0), puerperal endometritis (670.1), puerperal sepsis (670.2), puerperal septic thrombophlebitis (670.3), and other major puerperal infection (670.8). Puerperal infection refers to a bacterial infection following childbirth. An estimated 2% to 4% of new mothers who deliver vaginally suffer some form of puerperal infection, but for cesarean sections, the figure is 5-10 times higher.
