Mucositis

Effective October 1, 2006, codes were created for mucositis of different anatomic sites. Mucous membranes line the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum. When mucous cells are destroyed by anticancer treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation, the mucosa sheds and is susceptible to lacerations and general wasting. In oral mucositis or stomatitis, painful ulcerative sores develop, resulting in difficulty eating, drinking and taking oral medications. In some cases, mucositis causes infection and hemorrhage.
