Myalgia of Mastication and Auxiliary Muscles

New codes were created for myalgia of mastication muscle (M79.11); myalgia of auxiliary muscles, head and neck (M79.12); myalgia of unspecified site (M79.10); and myalgia of other sites (M79.18). Myalgia of the mastication and auxiliary muscles is the most common complaint of patients who present with temporomandibular dysfunction. There are four muscles of mastication – the masseter, temporalis, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid. These muscles of mastication are associated with movements of the jaw (temporomandibular joint).
